A man calling himself a pastor who married a 10-year-old girl has been sentenced to five years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor.
Daniel Cormier was convicted in October. He has served the equivalent of 11 months in jail and has four years and one month left to serve.
He married the girl in 1999. She is now 19.
Crown prosecutor Anne-Andree Charette was looking for the maximum sentence of 10 years.
The defence was seeking a sentence of three-to-four years.
Charette was not happy with the sentence, saying Cormier is a danger because he showed no remorse for his actions.
"He just tried to find justifications to I would say pedophilic gestures, or at least sexual gestures," she told reporters outside of the courtroom.
Cormier, 57, was the head of a now-defunct evangelical church called The Church of Downtown Montreal.
The girl testified that she was too young to understand the idea of marriage.
During the trial another young woman came forward with allegations of abuse. That trial is currently ongoing.
