The days of live horse racing at the Montreal Hippodrome could be over for good.

Quebec is looking at closing the track permanently but there would still be off-track betting and more video lottery machines.

Attractions Hippiques, a private company, was contracted in 2006 to move the hippodrome from Montreal to the north shore and create a gaming hall with extra VLTs.

But that hasn't happened and the owners and horse breeders say they're losing money.

They have taken legal action, claiming the operators of the track are in breach of contract.
