A motion to ban wood-burning stoves or fireplaces in any new or existing construction will be put forward by the city at a council meeting before the end of the month.

The city wants to cut back on the home heaters due to pollution. It says they are the biggest cause of smog during the winter. It has been a long-standing issue.

The motion will be tabled at a meeting on Feb. 23.

The exceptions are for commercial buildings, such as restaurants in zoned areas where they are already permitted.

The city has asked the Quebec government for a program to help residents convert to other, less polluting forms of heating, such as stoves that burn pellets.

The city will hold public consultations in March and April for residents to speak on the matter.

The commission will make its recommendations in May.

The city council anticipates adopting the motion as it stands or with revisions.
