Police suspect arson in a major rooming-house fire that injured two people Thursday morning on the western edge of downtown.

75 firefighters battled the blaze, which broke out around 8:20 a.m. in a three-storey building at 2144 Tupper St. near the Montreal Children's Hospital.

The fire started on the second floor and spread to the third floor and the roof.

One woman suffered from smoke inhalation and a second woman was hurt when she jumped from the second floor.

About 40 people were forced into the street -- the Red Cross is taking care of them.

Heavy damage

Six apartment units were heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water.

Over next few days, the downtown Ville-Marie borough will meet the building's owner to discuss repairs and relocation plans for residents.
