Quebecers can now remove the winter tires from their cars.

By law, winter tires are required on all taxi and passenger vehicles that are registered or rented in Quebec, between December 15 and March 15.

The amendment to Quebec's highway safety code making winter tires mandatory was passed in September 2008.

"It is important to remember that tires specifically designed for winter driving constitute a safe solution for driving in winter. They are designed to provide maximum grip on snow and ice covered surfaces," reads a statement on the Transports Qubec website.

According to Transports Qubec, data collected in 2005 shows that 38 per cent of all winter accidents involve at least one vehicle with all-season tires.

Fines for driving without winter tires during the designated three-month period range from $200 to $300.
