Paul Fontaine, a member of the Hells Angels, has been sentenced to two life terms in prison.
He was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of prison guard Pierre Rondeau and in the attempted murder of another prison guard, Robert Corriveau.
Rondeau was shot to death on Sept. 8, 1997. He was driving an armoured bus to the Rivi�re-des-Prairies detention centre when he and Corriveau were ambushed by two gunmen.
A life sentence is 25 years in jail with no parole.
The sentencing was delayed because the defense wanted the judge to investigate allegations of jury tampering.
The defence claims one of the constables responsible for the safety of the jurors acted irresponsibly by exchanging emails with some members of the jury. One became friends with the guard, and another one exchanged lottery results.
Fontaine's lawyer also alleges that a juror left a voicemail message to celebrity crime reporter Claude Poirier. The judge rejected the request of the defense, claiming he had no jurisdiction to hold such a hearing.
