The government has confirmed the first case of the H1N1 virus, formerly known as swine flu, in Quebec. It is in the Montreal area.

Officials gave few details, not saying if it was a man or a woman who contracted this particular flu, only saying it is a mild case and the patient has been sent home.

The public health director for the province, Alain Poirier, did say that the health agency is going on the seven-seven rule. The patient has upto seven days after being exposed to exhibit symptoms, and from that point is considered contagious for seven days.

He also spoke about what to do if someone thinks they may have been exposed to the virus.

"In general, what we ask is if there's a history of recent exposure for instance to Mexico or to a confirmed case, for instance the family of this person, is that they should get the information, and then if they have symptoms compatible then they have the test. And then they will be given specific recommendation," he said.
