Overall crime rates were up but murders and attempted murders were down in 2008, according to the latest figures released by Montreal police.

The crime rate rose by 2.6% last year while murders were down 43.1%, according to an annual report released on Tuesday.

Montreal police chief Yvan Delorme also touted his force's anti-gang efforts.

"Crimes related to street gangs fell sharply in terms of homicides and attempted homicides," he said in a statement.

"Aggressive raids led to the seizure of 172 weapons belonging to street gangs."

The toll on the roads

The death toll on Montreal roads also fell in 2008, according to the report, with 13.25% fewer deadly collisions and a 25% drop in pedestrian fatalities.
