Thousands of Canadian jobs are in jeopardy Wednesday as General Motors shuts down 264 auto dealers across Canada, including dozens in Quebec.

A source tells CTV News that at least 60 dealerships in Quebec will be informed by email on Wednesday that they will close.

Just last week, more than 1,000 GM dealers in the United States got word that they had to shut down.

The move is part of a restructuring plan that GM must deliver to the U.S. government in order to secure more funding.

Government pressure

GM says that as part of its "more aggressive operating plan," under pressure from the federal and Ontario governments, it will advise Canadian dealers of the specifics of its `network consolidation.'

This will include identifying dealers whose agreements will not be renewed when they expire in October 2010.

GM said the cuts are focused on key urban markets.
