Although Monday marks the first day of strict new border rules between Canada and the United States, Canadians are still able to cross the border without a passport.

American border security agents told CTV Montreal there will be a grace period for an undetermined period of time, but it will most likely run until the end of the summer.

Motorists crossing at the Lacolle border say they are not finding the wait times any longer than usual.

Most motorists CTV Montreal spoke with already had passports. A few were trying out their new Quebec enhanced licenses.

According to Passport Canada, about 54 per cent of Canadians have a passport, compared to just 30 per cent of Americans.
