MONTREAL -- The Competition Bureau of Canada is cracking down on illegal telemarketing schemes in Montreal.

The organization is targeting 50 individuals and businesses believed to be involved in fraudulent telephone directory sales.

About 150 investigators executed 10 search warrants in and around the city today but deputy commissioner Andrea Rosen says no arrests have yet been made.

Operation Mirage has been dubbed the "largest-ever" crackdown on deceptive telemarketing in Canada.

It is also the first investigation conducted under the newly amended Competition Act which carries significantly higher penalties for those who are convicted.

As part of the Canadian investigation, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed suit last week to halt the operations of three suspicious Montreal telemarketing companies.
