Toronto FC made a major shakeup Tuesday, releasing Montreal-born goalkeeper Greg Sutton after acquiring defender Nick Garcia and the rights to Canadian forward Ali Gerba from San Jose.

Toronto snagged Garcia and the discovery rights to Gerba from the Earthquakes in exchange for its third-round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sutton, formerly of the Impact, had been with Toronto FC since its inception. The 32-year-old lost his starting job at the start of the season to rookie Stefan Frei, taken with the 13th pick in this year's draft.

Sutton, who has played with the Canadian national team, recorded a loss and a tie with Toronto FC this season but has made just one start.

"First and foremost we want to thank Greg for everything he has done for this club," team manager Mo Johnston said in a statement. "Greg has always been the consummate professional, he was the first goalkeeper signed by this club, and this was a difficult decision to make. We wish him all the best."

Gerba's story

Gerba, who like Sutton is also a former Impact player, had been linked to MLS after third-tier English team Milton Keynes Dons FC refused to renew his contract. The 27-year-old has made 23 appearances with the Canadian team, scoring 11 goals.

"On Ali Gerba, he's another one that's been on our radar," said Johnston. "We look forward to sitting down with him and getting a contract signed as soon as we can."
