The Quebec Liberals won both by-elections Monday night.

It was an easy and expected sweep in the Montreal riding of Margeurite-Bourgeoys. Star candidate Clement Gignac clobbered his opponents. Parti Quebecois candidate Christine Normandin trailed far behind.

Gignac, who is a former chief economist with National Bank, has been touted as cabinet material. Premier Jean Charest said as much in his speech after the votes were counted, "I want Clement Gignac to be part of my team so we can help Quebec rebound and build Quebec's future."

It was a narrower, but perhaps sweeter victory in the Riviere-du-Loup riding. Jean D'Amour reclaimed the riding for the Liberals after more than 14 years in the hands of L'Action Democratique du Quebec. They also shoved aside high-profile Parti-Quebecois candidate Paul Crete.
