Hundreds of protesters marched through downtown Montreal Sunday to show their support for pro-democracy demonstrators in Iran.

They gathered at Dorchester Square and proceeded to march east along Rene-Levesque to the Guy Favreau Complex, a federal government building.

Some of the protesters carried signs with pictures of the bloody conflicts taking place in Tehran, Iran's capital city.

"They're killing innocent people in the streets and every communication is filtered," said protester Sahar Mofidi.

"As long as the people in Iran continue to struggle to get their right to vote, and for democracy in Iran, we will continue to struggle with them," said another protester, who identified himself only as Farzan.

Iranian Canadians and their supporters have been holding vigils in Montreal since hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner by a landslide in national elections held June 12.

Supporters of opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, who claim the elections were rigged in favour of Ahmadinejad, have been protesting in the streets of Tehran and clashing with Iranian authorities.

According to Iranian state television, the death toll from anti-government demonstrations has reached at least 17.
