A 7-year-old boy has drowned while on a trip with his school's day care on Tuesday, Mirabel police said.
The accident happened just before 11 a.m. at Bois des Belle-Riviere, a nature park.
About 30 kids from St. Philippe School, in St. Philippe D'Argenteuil, were on a day trip with the school's day care. They were swimming in a man-made lake when one of the kids approached one of the two lifeguards to say there were some kids horsing around, said Daniel Rivest, a spokesperson for Mirabel Police.
The lifeguards asked all the kids to get out of the water, which is 1.8 metres at its deepest point.
Once the kids were out of the water, the lifeguards noticed not all the children were accounted for. They lowered the water level by two feet and found the boy floating, according to police.
The life guards performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but were not able to revive him. An ambulance was called and the boy was taken to St. Eustache hospital, then to the Montreal Children's Hospital.
The two lifeguards, who are believed to be in their late teens or early twenties, were taken to hospital to be treated for shock. Counselors from the CLSC were on-site at the nature park to help staff cope.
