It's 77 years old, weighs 6 tones and is covered in rust.

But for Heritage Montreal, the Guaranteed Milk Bottle sitting on a vacant building on Lucien-L'Allier just south of Rene Levesque, is a treasure.

"The milk bottle has been in downtown Montreal since the mid-thirties," said Dinu Bumbaru, of Heritage Montreal.

The city has approved zoning for a new water tower for the location where the milk 50-foot bottle currently sits. It used to be the water tower for a dairy.

If the milk bottle is replaced, Bumbaru says heritage Montreal will have two priorities: to fix up the bottle, and to find it a new home.

It really would be a shame if the milk bottle was lost.For me it's one of Montreal's icons like the "Farine Five Roses" sign that I always look out for when I visit your wonderful city.

There currently is a parking lot infront of the Bell Centre, that should be turned into a square and the Guaranteed Milk Bottle should be placed there. Just like a monument would normally be placed.

The city would create another square/green space which would be infront of an entertainment centre, where people would gather and at the same time use the Milk Bottle as a form of public art. Maybe even build some sort of fountain around it!

Who doesn't love this Montreal icon? I think the perfect spot for it would be perched on top of the Musee d'Art Contemporain, in the heart of Place des Spectacles. Andy Warhol would be delighted with this fine example of "Pop Art"!
