The Bixis have only been operational for a month-and-a-half, but Montrealers are already in love with the short-term rental bicycle.

The 3,000-bicycle fleet has already been pedalled for more than one million kilometers.

City officials say they are suprised at the number of users that nearly 6,000 different people have used the Bixis, either just for the day or on a regular basis.

Executive Committee member Andre Lavallee says the bicycles are "already part of the daily life of many Montrealers."

Officials from New York and London have taken a look at the system, and are considering starting their own bicycle sharing systems.

But the Bixi bikes may become a victim of their own success.

About 50 bicycles are unaccounted for, and it's believed that by using extreme force, thieves have been able to yank the bikes out of their locking stations.

Police are looking into the thefts.
