Another Quebecer has died from the H1N1 flu virus, bringing the total number of victims in the province to 16, the provincial public health agency said in a news release on Tuesday.

The victim is a woman in her 60s who had underlying medical conditions.

Quebec's health agency also announced 16 new confirmed cases of H1N1, which raises the provincial total to 2,263 since the end of April.

Across Canada, there have been more than 9,700 cases of H1N1 since the outbreak began.

Forty-one deaths are blamed on the virus.

Symptoms

H1N1 symptoms are similar to those exhibited by people with the seasonal flu: fever, loss of appetite, headache and muscle pain.

Some people also have nasal congestion, sore throat, nausea and vomiting.

Anyone with more serious symptoms, such as loss of consciousness, is advised to seek immediate medical help.

Sanitation the key

Health experts say frequent hand-washing and use of hand sanitizers is one of the best ways to curb the spread of the H1N1 virus and all other contagious diseases.

People are also asked to sneeze into the crook of their elbow, or into their shoulder, rather than into their hands.
