A 21-year-old man was murdered at a house party in Laval Friday night.

Police said there were about 50 people celebrating a birthday at a duplex on Vanier Blvd. Some guests were inside, while others stayed outdoors.

People fled the party after hearing gunshots around midnight.

"After the gunshot, there was a bit of panic. Everyone was running everywhere," said Laval police Const. Francois Dumais.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the young man lying on the ground outside.

The victim, a cousin of the homeowners, had been shot in the upper body. He was not known to police.

"He's not related to any gang," said Dumais.

While the motive for the shooting remains unclear, police believe there may have been a fight before the shots were fired.

Investigators are asking witnesses who fled the scene to come forward.
