The federal government has cut funding for this year's Divers/Cit gay pride festivities in Montreal.

Earlier this year Toronto's gay pride parade received $400,000, and that decision caused a split within the Conservative party.

The minister responsible, Diane Ablonczy, was sidelined after other MP's said Ottawa should not support the gay lifestyle.

The news that Montreal's celebration would not receive $150,000 is a crushing blow for co-founder Suzanne Girard.

She's been with the organization for 17 years, and now has to decide how to cope.

"A shock to know that we have to sit down and make hard choices today," said co-founder Suzanne Girard

Daniel St. Louis of the Gay chamber of commence calls it a shame.

"Divers/Cit is one of the more important major events in the city of Montreal during the course of the summer," said St. Louis. "Why it wasn't granted is beyond me."

Many in Montreal's gay village think the decision is strictly partisan politics.

"I think it's a shame if we're putting money into all these other festivals we need to give some funding to gay pride. That's just basic rights," said one man."

The tories are handing out $100 million to other festivals across the country, but somehow Montreal's Divers/Cit didn't make the cut.

The festival will go on - if a little trimmed down.

With only three days before the festival begins, organizers say the fight to restore funding will be held on another day.
