A demonstration in Montreal on Saturday that was billed as a day of action for Iran is one of many taking place in across the globe.

The organization United for Iran has set up activities in 105 cities.

In Montreal, an assembly followed by a downtown march is taking place in the afternoon.

The protests are in response to the hotly contested Iranian elections of June 12. Organizers, however, say the events are non-partisan, and in the name of human rights.

In addition to the marches, a smaller group is staging a two-day hunger strike that started on Friday.

The group of 20 or so people located at Place du Canada downtown says it is striking for the liberation of political prisoners, for the end of torture and for the abolition of the death penalty.

The hunger strike will end on Saturday around 6 p.m., and will be followed by a concert of traditional Iranian music.
