A man riding on the roof of a car at a fast food drive-through was caught on camera by a Quebec City TV crew on Thursday night.

TVA cameras were rolling while the car was at a McDonald's drive-though window. The car sped off to a nearby parking lot with the man still on the roof. He dismounted from the roof on his own.

Police were able to track down the vehicle and the four-people involved: a 19-year-old and three 20-year-olds.

All of the men could face charges once police complete their investigation.

A trend?

Two alleged car surfing incidents have already been reported in Quebec this summer. Kevin Ducharme, 38, died earlier this month, nearly a week after falling from the roof of his SUV in Dollard-des-Ormeaux and sustaining severe head injuries.

Tommy Palliser, 33, faces criminal charges in that case because he was behind the wheel.

Earlier this week, a 17-year-old girl was one of several young people car surfing on a vehicle in Drummondville when she fell and suffered critical head injuries.

Jessica Gauthier, 18, is accused of dangerous driving causing injuries in that incident.

Take the keys away: SQ

Police say car surfing is not a new phenomenon, but appears to be gaining popularity through the Internet, as a result of videotaped incidents on YouTube.

Surete du Quebec Sgt. Chantal Mackels has a message for young drivers:

"Car surfing is so dangerous. It's a trend that should be stopped, and you should tell your friends not to do it any more because somebody can really get hurt and somebody can die."

The SQ is also warning parents to make sure their kids are not participating in this kind of activity.

"Parents should know that if your teenagers are doing this kind of stuff, please take their keys away. They don't deserve to be driving if they're doing things like that. And be aware that all the drivers of these cars can be brought to justice because it could cause injury to someone," said SQ spokesperson Chantal Mackels.
