Heavy rain didn't stop the caber tossing and haggis tasting at the 33rd Highland Games in Montreal Sunday.

Despite true Scottish weather delaying the opening ceremony, bagpipes serenaded a small crowd at George Springate Sports Centre in Pierrefonds. Highland dancers kicked up their heels to get into the spirit.

Athletes participated in the seven heavyweight events that included throwing hammers, weights, sheaves and 120-pound cabers. Two athletes from Scotland competed this year.

"The conditions today are appalling, so it's very difficult and rather dangerous quite frankly," said David Webster, and organizer of the event. "They try to throw (the caber) as accurately as possible, in other word they want to throw it straight, so it turns end over end and points directly away form the thrower."

That wasn't so easy with a torrential downpour this afternoon.

Regardless, the competition went on, and so did the bands.

In addition to the athletics, the Montreal Scottish Festival is also one of the largest pipe band competitions in North America, attracting between 40 and 50 pipe bands.
