Four Montreal men are being detained in a Cuban prison after a Toronto woman claims she was raped in Varadero two weeks ago.

The young woman has filed sexual aggression charges in connection with events that occurred on July 18th. The woman and her sister met the four detainees while vacationing in Varadero and the young woman returned to the men's hotel room after a night of partying.

According to defence attorney John Pepper Jr., the four men claim they had consensual sexual relations with the woman.

Charges may be laid against the men after police hand over their evidence to the Cuban prosecutor.

Pepper says the woman and her sister initially tried to retract their statements, but then reconsidered when told by an investigator there would be consequences to those actions.

"In fact, (the investigator) had asked that the two sisters remain in Cuba, but they decided not to remain there and flew the coop Friday night," said Pepper.

Calls made by CTV to the woman's house have gone unanswered.
