Montrealers gathered at Phillips Square on Ste. Catherine St. Wednesday to protest the inauguration of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Protests in Montreal have been a fairly regular occurrence since the July 12th vote in Iran re-elected Ahmadinejad.

Wednesday's protests were part of a new round of demonstrations worldwide against the second term of the Iranian leader.

In Iran Wednesday, witnesses say riot police used batons to disperse the protestors who were chanting "death to the dictator."

At least 30 people have died in Iran in street protests which followed the June 12th vote, according to figures from a parliamentary investigation. Hundreds have been detained. Human rights groups believe the death toll is likely far higher.

Ahmadinejad's main conservative election challenger Mohsen Rezaei -- who served as commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guards -- has led the demands for high-level probes into abuse of power. On Tuesday, he warned that Iran could be moving toward a "religious dictatorship" if the ruling establishment tried to cling to power at all costs, according to a speech posted on reformist Web sites.
