The provincial Young Liberals will meet this weekend in Quebec City, and they are advocating some fairly radical ideas.

Julien Gagnon is calling on his elected counterparts to implement a hefty Hydro rate hike, road tolls, and higher fees for many other government services.

"We are proposing to increase the gas tax," said Gagnon.

He feels the drastic measures are necessary because according to current economic projections, the provincial budget is not expected to be balanced before the 2013-14 fiscal year.

In addition, health care costs are expected to soar as Quebec's population ages, and as more baby boomers retire, Quebec's working population is expected to shrink.

Therefore the Young Liberals want to build up a surplus now, before it becomes impossible.

"It won't necesssarily be comfortable but we don't build a future with comfortable ideas," said Gagnon, the Young Liberals' president.

Youth wing delegates will debate the resolutions this weekend, and Premier Jean Charest will be there for a first reaction.
