A 33-year-old Chateauguay man was killed mid-day Friday in what appears to be high-speed crash.

The victim was alone in the vehicle when it crashed under a bridge on St. Bernard Rd. and landed upside down in the Chateauguay River.

He was taken to Anna Laberge Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Local residents say the area is notorious for speeders, despite the 50 kilometre per hour speed restriction.

Dwight Richard, a nearby resident, said he has seen many accidents on that strip of road in the years he's lived there, and said the victim in this crash must have been driving well over the limit due to the extent of the damage.

"The top was all caved in, plus he had hit the secondary bridge in the middle, so that means he was spinning in the air," said Richard. "He cleared about 200 feet in the air, plus doing a flip."

For now, the crash is being treated as an accident, say police.
