MONTREAL - The family of a teen killed by Montreal police is taking part in community events this weekend to mark the first anniversary of the incident.

Police shot 18-year-old Fredy Villanueva and wounded two other youths last year in the city's Montreal North neighbourhood.

Widespread rioting erupted in the low-income area the day after the shooting.

Today's commemoration, dubbed Hoodstock by organizers, kicks off with public forums where locals can discuss community issues.

There will also be a free outdoor concert featuring urban artists.

And a march will be held in the streets of Montreal North tomorrow -- a year to the day Villanueva died.

Police will be on high alert today and tomorrow.

Community activist Will Prosper says over the last year, the Quebec and municipal governments have pumped a lot of money into the neighbourhood.

But he says relations between police and local youths remain tense.
