A sudden, violent storm blew over trees and damaged cars when it struck Brome Lake early Tuesday morning.

The microburst also knocked down power lines, and damaged homes and cars.

Gerry Moar owns the Knowlton Marina , and was woken up when hail started hitting his roof around 1:30 in the morning.

"I went downstairs because I could hear hail on the roof. I tried to close the front door and I couldn't! The wind was so strong and it was just coming in horizontal, the rain and the wind," said Moar.

"I couldn't even see the boats. I had to wait until it was finished to see the damage."

When Moar could go outside, the wreckage was impressive. A 30-foot sailboat had sunk, while other boats were turned on their side, or blown completely out of the water and onto dry land.

He started cleaning up the debris strewn around the marina before dawn.

Extensive Damage

A microburst is a small, localized storm characterized by a sudden downdraft that produces wind gusts up to 270 km/h over an area less than 4 kilometres in diameter.

The air drops straight down, then spreads over the terrain, much like water being poured onto the ground forms a puddle, except it's incredibly violent.

Around Brome Lake the damage is extensive.

Trees were blown over, their roots ripped out of the ground or the trunk shattered by the force of the wind, and those that did stay planted in the ground lost branches.
