For the first time in thousands of tournaments, the top eight-seeded tennis players in the world have all advanced to the quarterfinals.

That means Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nikolay Davydenko are still competing in the Rogers Cup.

Federer said the feat was manageable because the top eight did not have to play in the tournament's opening round.

"But at the same time, it's not just the top eight seeds, it's the top eight players in the world, so it's definitely a special occasion," said Federer.

The main event on Thursday was at center court, where Stan Wawrink challenged Federer.

Federer won 6-3, 7-6 against his countryman.

The tendonitis that has been plaguing Nadal's knees seemed to be under control as the number two competitor in the world cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Philipp Petzschner.

Nadal will face Del Potro in Friday's match.

On Thursday, Roddick had the rockiest win of the night, after coming out of the blocks with a 4-0 lead, but blowing it only to win the opening set with a tiebreak, then lost the second set to Verdasco. Roddick slogged his way through a grueling third set to defeate the Spaniard in yet another tiebreak 7-6.

Djokovic, who defeated Roddick in 2007 and went on to claim the Rogers Cup, will be Roddick's competition in Friday's match.
