The Hudson's Bay company is considering selling off its Montreal flagship store.

HBC says it would sell the building, but continue to rent the location on St. Catherine.

The retail giant has been losing market share for years, and like many companies, will not reach it sales targets this summer because shoppers were not inclined to buy summertime products during stretches of cool, wet weather.

However HBC owner Richard Baker says the company is making money and at the moment is cash-rich.

"We think Canada has one of the best performing economies in the world right now ... We have substantial investments in Canada. We are always out looking to add to it," said Baker in an interview with The Globe and Mail.

Baker says The Bay and Zellers real estate across the country is worth $1.2 billion.

In the past year HBC has laid off 1,000 employees, 5% of its total work force.
