We may not be in the midst of an official heat wave, but for many it certainly feels like it.

The hot and humid temperatures that descended on Montreal last Thursday are lingering, with a high today of 32 degrees Celsius.

Environment Canada defines a heat wave as three consecutive days of temperatures of 32C or higher.

With today's sweltering heat, the weather agency has issued a high heat and humidity warning for Montreal and Laval.

"A high humidex value of 40 to 43 is expected over these regions today," reads an official weather warning on Environment Canada's website.

"During this period, people suffering from chronic diseases (ex.: heart and respiratory diseases) could see their condition deteriorate. Moreover, exposure to these conditions could cause discomfort like muscle cramps, exhaustion and heatstroke."

It is recommended that people take the following precautions to cope with the heat:

  • drink a lot of water
  • reduce physical activities
  • seek air conditioned or shady areas

Smog alert prompts Laval to reduce bus fares

In light of a smog warning issued by Environment Canada on Sunday, the Societe de transport de Laval has lowered its bus fares to $1.

The special rate was put into effect to encourage drivers to give up their cars and use public transit -- to help improve air quality on smoggy days.
