A ride home from a party turned into a trip to the hospital for a Laval girl.

The 16-year-old was sitting on the truck of a Mitsubishi convertible, with her feet on the rear passenger seat, as the driver turned from De Clemency to Angers street.

According to Laval police officer Sgt. Francois Dumais the girl, who was not buckled in, lost her balance and fell onto the street.

"It was 1:30 when we got the call to 911 for a woman who had been ejected from the car," said Dumais. "She suffered from multiple fractures to her arm, her leg and her jaw. She was taken to hospital for her injuries, but we don't fear for her life."

Police say the 18-year-old driver had been drinking, which violates the terms of his probationary license.

Not drunk, but had been drinking

"He was not drunk, he didn't fail his alcohol test, but there were traces of alcohol," said Dumais.

The driver will be fined, because under Quebec's graduated licensing system, there is "zero tolerance for alcohol" for anyone who has had their license for less than 24 months.

He will likely lose his license, because probationary license holders only have four demerit points, and the penalty for drinking and driving is four points.

Police are also recommending charges of dangerous driving causing injury and criminal negligence.

A 16-year-old boy who was also in the car at the time was not hurt.
