Chateauguay residents have won a victory in their fight to keep a cell phone tower out of their neighborhood.

Rogers Gommunications had planned to build a 30-meter tall tower in the Seigniory Park neighbourhood, just over the fence from David Poirier's neighbour's house.

The tower proposal included a small building to house a generator and other equipment.

Neighbours felt it would become an eyesore.

"That's scary, that's right over your head," said Poirier.

But after months of fighting, the project has been halted, at least temporarily, after Industry Canada revoked its approval for the project.

"I don't doubt for a minute that Rogers is going to fight it. But they have to do it properly this time," said Poirier.

City councillor Steve Brisebois says Chateauguay has also revoked Rogers's permit.

"They've sort of put the hold on with Rogers pending further investigation and better public consultation, which wasn't done properly from the begining," said Brisebois.

Part of Chateauguay's industrial park is less than a kilometer from Poirier and his neighbours. Even though the city of Chateauguay recommended this site to Rogers, the company said the site just wasn't suitable for its needs.

Brisebois says Chateauguay is still trying to convince Rogers to choose a different location for its cell phone tower, and he says the company is more than welcome to build, provided it's a good corporate citizen.
