A toddler drowned Monday in a backyard pool in Lachenaie, just east of Montreal.

A teenage sibling found the two-year-old boy face down in the pool and alerted adults inside the house around 8:30 a.m.

Paramedics performed resuscitation manoeuvres on the child.

The victim was transported to hospital and pronounced dead.

The Surete du Quebec did not provide much information, but is investigating the incident.

"The investigators are looking around the pool to have some information regarding what happened," said Sgt. Benoit Richard.

There was no fense surrounding the pool. Last month, the Quebec government unveiled a bill requiring new pool owners to build a fence at least four feet high around swimming pools.

At least four Quebec children have died in backyard pools this year. Two children have died in public pools.

It takes a child 15 to 60 seconds to drown, said the Quebec Livesaving Society.
