The union representing Montreal city-bus drivers says the St. Urbain Street bike path is dangerous and that it might be only a matter of time before a cyclist is hurt or killed.

The union filed a complaint Monday with the Workplace, Health and Safety Commission, saying the path's location makes it difficult for drivers to safely let off passengers.

Drivers say the painted lines marking off the path are inadequate, and that drivers are forced to cross onto the path every time they make stops.

"The last thing that we want is to see an accident," union spokesman Claude Benoit said in a statement.

"Someone has to take responsibility, and the sooner, the better."

The union says the popular bike path should be moved to the left-hand side of the street.

It adds that previous complaints to the city and the CSST have fallen on deaf ears.

Meetings

The city's transport department and officials with the transit corporation plan to meet with the union to discuss the issue later this week.

Darren Becker, a spokesman for Mayor Gerald Tremblay, told CTV News that the timing of the union's complaint was unusual given that the bike path has been in place for three years.
