A toddler was seriously injured Tuesday morning after falling from a window in Verdun.

Police received a call around 10:30 a.m. after the boy, who is under two years old, fell 15 feet from the second storey of a duplex into an alley.

"I heard the child screaming and then I heard his sister screaming. They were screaming 'Mon Dieu! oh mon Dieu!'" said witness Erwin Regler.

It happened at a home on 5th Ave. in Verdun near LaSalle St., and thre was no screen on the window, said police.

There were other people in the room at the time, including the boy's mother, so police say they're not quite sure how the child managed to get to the window.

The boy was taken to hospital with an apparent skull fracture. He regained consciousness in hospital and doctors believe the child will live. He is being kept in hospital for observation for 48 hours.

Investigators say so far, the incident looks unintentional.

"Investigators were called on the scene to try to figure out if anything criminal could appear in the elements that they've gathered, or by speaking with people that were there. So far nothing seems to be criminal it all seems like a sad accident," said Montreal police Const. Anie Lemieux.
