A 37-year-old woman is dead in north-end Montreal in a case of conjugal violence witnessed by the victim's children.

Paramedics answered a call at around 1:10 a.m. at 7917 21st Ave. near Cremazie in St-Michel and found a woman near death.

They tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The woman's husband, a man in his early 40s, was brought to hospital with injuries and is considered an "important witness" but he's not yet a suspect.

"When we arrived, he was badly injured. He had to be sent to hospital and (was) unconscious, so there's no way you can place someone under arrest if he doesn't understand what you're saying," said Montreal police Const. Olivier Lapointe.

Major crimes investigators will interview the man in hospital later on Wednesday.

Young witnesses

Two girls, aged 11 and 15, were inside the home at the time of the death, as was their grandmother.

The girls were slightly injured and were suffering from shock. It's not yet clear if they were attacked or trying to defend their mother. Both are in the care of child protection services.

This is the 23rd homicide in Montreal so far this year.
