Last winter, Montreal commuters suffered delays and breakdowns on AMT trains - this winter, the agency wants to raise fares.

The Metropolitan transit agency wants to raise the cost of monthly passes by 1.75 per cent as of Jan. 1.

But spokesman Pierre-Luc Paquette tells CTV News that the hike is not a done deal.

He says the decision is based on input from AMT partners including the Montreal Transit Corporation, and agencies in Laval and the south shore.

Paquette said the agencies will respond by mid-September and the AMT will make any decisions at that time.

Paquette also says the hike is a "modest request" compared with the four-per-cent hike last year.

The AMT also hiked fares last January.
