The Quebec Bar Association has found embattled Montreal lawyer Claude F. Archambault guilty of mishandling clients' money, setting the stage for his possible disbarment.

The bar's disciplinary committee says Archambault failed to deposit clients' funds into a trust account as required by the professional order.

Archambault was initially charged with 111 counts related to mishandled money. Some of his clients were allegedly bilked of $165,000.

More money problems

The problems with the bar are not Archambualt's only concerns.

Back in 2006, bailiffs visited Archambault's offices amid reports he owed nearly $835,000 in federal back taxes.

Archambault has represented several high-profile clients, including disgraced former music producer Guy Cloutier as well as Mourad Ikhlef, an Algerian who was deported for alleged ties to millennium bomber Ahmed Ressam.

He also defended the family of Quillem Registre, a Montreal man who died in 2007 after he was tasered by Montreal police.
