A 39-year-old man died Wednesday morning when his car collided head-on with a tractor-trailer near the U.S. border.

The man was traveling eastbound on Route 202 in Stanbridge around 1:30 a.m. when he suddenly changed lanes and struck the truck head-on.

The truck driver was not injured.

The road was closed for several hours as investigators try to determine why the man veered into oncoming traffic.

Diesel fuel leaked following the collision but workers were able to quickly contain it.

Stanbridge is about 90 kilometres south of Montreal.

Car loses control

Police believe speed and alcohol led a 24-year-old man to lose control of his car in St. Remi, 40 kilometres south of Montreal.

The car flipped several times on Route 209 before hitting a tree on Tuesday evening.

The victim was transported to a south-shore hospital and then transferred to Montreal.

He's in critical condition.
