Black bears are coming into neighbourhoods in the Laurentians and the Lanaudiere, north of Montreal.

While bears often come looking for food in springtime, the poor summer weather has left the bears with a shortfall in their usual diet of berries, which they're hoping to supplement by raiding bird feeders, garbage cans and compost bins.

At least 30 bears have been captured and relocated this summer, which doesn't surprise the Ecomuseum's Patricia Presseau.

"People are going deeper into forests to go camping or to find land to build homes," said Presseau.

Lucien Lavoie has been living in St. Donat for 24 years, but this is the first time he's seen bears in his backyard.

He's spent the past week filming one family of three which has been raiding his bird feeder.

"it's impressive, and its nice to see the little ones," said Lavoie.

Impressive, but wildlife experts are quick to warn residents that bears are wild animals who have frequently been put down for encroaching on human territory.
