International soccer superstar David Beckham is interested in partnering with Montreal cheese magnate Joey Saputo to move the Impact club into Major League Soccer, according to a report in The New York Times.

The Times soccer blog, entitled Goal, cited people close to Beckham in a report published on Monday.

Beckham's MLS contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy includes a clause that allows him to operate a team in the league as early as the 2012 season.

Saputo mum

Saputo, who is president of the Impact, has confirmed that he was approached two months ago by a group of potential partners but he wouldn't confirm that Bekham was part of the group.

Saputo has expressed his desire to have the Impact join the MLS, which is one tier higher than the United Soccer League where Impact currently play.
