It appears that cars stolen in Quebec often end up a very long way from home.

Vehicles stolen in this province frequently end up in Ghana and Dubai, after passing through European countries, according a report in the Journal de Montreal.

One of the most popular models in West African country of Ghana is the Toyota RAV4.

It happens to be one of the most stolen vehicles in Montreal.

In Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, BMWs, Porsches and SUVs of all varieties are in high demand.

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, about half of all cars stolen in Montreal end up overseas. They are shipped from the Port of Montreal to Belgium or Italy, and are then sent on primarily to Ghana or Dubai.

The remaining half of cars stolen in the city are used for parts.

Last year, the Insurance Bureau of Canada reported the following numbers of stolen cars:

  • Canada -- 125, 271
  • Quebec -- 31, 091
  • Montreal -- 22, 400

About 40 percent of cars stolen in Quebec are recovered.
