The premiers of Ontario and Quebec are warning the federal government not to discriminate against central Canada in its new climate change plan.

Jean Charest and Dalton McGuinty say they want to make sure Ottawa's plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions won't put unfair burdens on any one region or sector of the economy.

Charest says the federal government must get with the rest of the world and use 1990 as the starting point for reductions, not 2006.

He says it's as if Ottawa is insisting on using the imperial system of measurement when the rest of the world has gone metric.

McGuinty says he wants assurances a Canadian cap and trade system for carbon would be compatible with the United States.

Preparing for a joint cabinet meeting in Toronto today, the two premiers said Canada must take a leadership role at the next United Nations' conference on climate change in Copenhagen this December.
