The city of Montreal has partially reopened a section of Peel St. that's been shut down since a falling chunk of concrete killed a woman eating in a sushi restaurant.

Two lanes were opened to traffic at 9:30 a.m. Friday on the west side of Peel between Sherbooke and de Maisonneuve.

Peel eastbound, where the concrete fell, remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

The decision was made after the city received an engineer's letter confirming the Marriott Hotel, where the chunk fell off, is now secure.

Quebec's building watchdog, the Regie du Batiment, has agreed with the assessment.

Alain Lavallee , a spokesman for the downtown Ville-Marie borough, tells CTV News that 600 out of nearly 1000 tiles on the Marriott Hotel have been bolted and secured.

Lea Guilbeault, 33, was killed in front of her husband in July when a chunk of concrete fell from near the top of the hotel's facade.

The street had been closed to traffic ever since the incident.

Unresolved issues

The owners of the hotel have until Sept. 21 to hand in their full engineer's report and Lavallee says the street might not be reopened on the hotel side until then.
