There were some anxious moments Wednesday morning at a St. Laurent daycare.

The building was evacuated after fumes spread into the Dalpe daycare on Deguire St.

Workers had been performing repairs to the garage using gas-powered machinery.

One daycare worker was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The children have since been allowed to return.

More than 80 children were rushed out of a daycare in St. Laurent Wednesday morning after a carbon monoxide leak.

Construction workers were repairing damage caused last year when fumes started making children ill.

Last November the building's underground garage collapsed, killing courier Mahamat Khazili Saleh s he sat in his car.

Now workers repairing the damage were using gasoline-powered equipment, which pumped noxious fumes into a daycare near the complex's basement.

Nathalie Comtois said she had to take the children outside.

"We smelled gas, so we left with the children," said Comtois. "People were getting sick."

Firefighters soon gave the clearance to go back in, but according to Burt Panarello of Urgences Sante, they soon had to return.

"The contractors started to ventilate the garage area," said Panarello. "Unfortunately he aimed the ventilator towards the building causing debris and dust now to enter the same daycare."

Three adults and two children were transported to hospital as a precaution, while the children were transferred to a nearby residence for the elderly.

Some parents took the two mishaps in stride, but Otman Dakhil will keep her daughter at home.

"I prefer not taking my daughter maybe for one week to daycare, until everything is safe," said Dakhil.

The Regie du Logement has dispatched inspectors to determine whether the building is properly ventilated.

The repair work will be stopped until workers can replace that gas powered machinery with something a little safer.
