Two fires broke out overnight in Montreal.

The first happened in a two-storey building at 12224 70th Avenue in Riviere des Prairies.

That fire apparently started when someone started deep-frying potatoes around 11 o'clock Friday night.

Nobody was seriously hurt, although the fire caused massive amounts of smoke damage.

The second fire began at two in the morning in a triplex at 569 Aird Street in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

A number of people were forced into the street but no one was injured.

A cigarette was left burning in a second-floor apartment.

Damage to that floor was extensive.
