Montreal city council has approved a massive redevelopment plan for the Radio-Canada site on Rene-Levesque blvd. on the eastern edge of downtown.

The $1.6 billion condominium project would reshape the area, turning the central tower into condos and erecting low-rise buildings on the large parking lots on either side.

The public broadcaster would stay on site, but would vacate most or all of the tower.

More than 2,000 new condos are planned, along with retail and office space.

The CBC has made commitments to dedicate 10 per cent of the project to affordable housing.

The development is expected to take 10 years to finish.
