For the first time in more than 20 years, there's a new nature preserve on the West Island.

On Friday officials announced the creation of the 42-hectare Rapides du Cheval Blanc park.

It runs for three kilometres along the shoreline of Riviere des Prairies in Pierrefonds-Roxboro, and incorporates three existing parks which were linked when the city acquired land from developers.

Executive Committee member Alan DeSousa was at the ceremony.

"It's an incredible piece of shoreline," said DeSousa. "The rapids are exciting and we hope that one day we'll see the white horse coming out of the waters as the legend says, and ultimately causing this park to be name Rapides du Cheval Blanc."

The city hopes to exand L'Anse a l'Orme park in the near future.
